Alex Urie

Chelsea MA Studio Award

Alex Urie is a painter working with a process-based practice, combining residual forms and figurative elements on the canvas into loose, abstracted arrangements. His paintings deal with residual spaces, bringing together elements taken from cartoon landscapes and film stills, along with observed details encountered in everyday life. The work is process driven; recognisable forms are undermined by the use of staining and timed action.

Alex was selected for the 2017/18 Chelsea MA Studio Award by Patrick Lynch (award donor), Hannah Corbett (former Chief Executive, Acme) and Charlie Coffey (Residencies & Awards Programme Manager, Acme) from a shortlist of six MA graduate artists from Chelsea College, University of the Arts, London.

Upon completing his award in September 2018, Alex presented BOUND at PEER alongside fellow early career programme artists Dominic Dispirito, Chris Timms, and James Tailor.

Chelsea MA Studio Award

The Chelsea MA Studio Award was a partnership between Acme and Chelsea College (University of the Arts, London), funded by Patrick Lynch and Acme, between 2016-18. Aiming to provide a bridge between art school and professional practice, the award included a generous bursary, rent-free studio space and mentoring programme. Recipients of Acme’s Early Career Awards Programme work from shared studios in order to encourage an environment of peer support and critical dialogue.
